XCESS
Xcess is a composition of 200 bags made out of plastic waste. Transforming polythene, car tyres and flip flops into bags. The materials used do not decay and accumulate hence causing hazards to the Environment. We are targeting 'Excess' garbage with in Kampala communities. We are creating a solution where negative excess becomes positive through productivity.
MEET THE ARTIST
Allen Nabukenya, who goes by the artist name of Njola, is a formal Multi media Visual Artist based in Uganda. Growing up near the slums of Nalukongo, people are the driving force behind her work. She transforms plastic waste into Artworks to eradicate on waste materials that are hazadous to environment. Following her dream of making recycling as a new culture, she decided to work and train community people about recycling. She also simplifies her Artworks into Fashion items, a way to reach her community as she believes everyone loves looking good.
How did the Creative Matterz Fund help you realize your project?
Creative matterz funds helped a lot in installation of the Mural, production of some bags and making a short documentary about Xcess. We wanted to complete the whole bag mural but we were challenged by the second lockdown which made prices on materials go high and we resorted to completing a few.
Who were your mentors?
Kim Gerlach
Alexandra Gheorghe
What learnings did you have?
It was about filming and I picked interest as well. In Uganda people love watching short videos and I thought it's also a good method to communicate the days since people are in lockdown.
What is your vision for the future?
To promote and educate youths about recycling as a way of cleaning our environment and as source of income.
How can one best support you?
We need financial support to be able to go to different communities. Please vote for our project!
